Bernard Pitt, born in 1881, was killed by the explosion of a German mine between Souchez and Givenchy at 7:00 p.m. on 30th April 1916. Among the letters from France and Flanders between December 1915 and April 1916, when he was serving with 47th Trench Mortar Battery, is a rare account of trench mortar work in the front line.
