Early chess manual titled An Introduction to the History and Study of Chess, printed in Cheltenham by H. Ruff in 1804. Includes Philidor’s Analysis of Chess and early English commentary “By an Amateur.” Rebound in half-leather with gilt borders, cloth sides and clean binding. Some foxing to title and preliminaries as shown on pages. Some of the previous owners have written in pencil these date from 1932 to 1972.
